Tips For Finding The Perfect Wedding Hair Stylist
So you are engaged, over the shock of getting engaged, and sitting down to plan a wedding.
You have your flowers picked, your dress pinned on Pinterest, and you’ve already begun the annoying task of growing out your hair…
The last thing you need to do is find your hairstylist, and I’m going to help you.
First off, do your research: Sift through all the vendors/stylists on TheKnot.com, browse photos from actual weddings, and check the prices…there is nothing worse than falling in love with something (or someone) and realizing they are not within your wedding budget.
Check local hashtags like: #houstonmuah, #houstonweddings, #houstonbrides, these are some examples that may be good to skim on Instagram to find some work that will stand out to you.
Ask a friend (or a friend of a friend) who they used, especially if you liked their photos. Chances are they have all the info and more than happy to brag on anyone who made them feel amazing on their big day.
Second: realize that you may have to shell out half the cost for the hair and makeup to keep it affordable for the bridal party.
What I suggest, the bride cover the deposit (half the total cost of the service for the wedding day), and leave the other half to split amongst her bridesmaids. This is especially important if you don’t want one of your girls walking down the aisle with the blue eye shadow and fuchsia lipstick she let another bridesmaid help her with.
Build it into your budget!
You will pay triple what you spent on hair and makeup, for your photographer and videographer alone, so why not opt to look good in those photos?
Choose realistic options before your trial appointment: Bring in as many photos as you can of the direction you want your hair to go. Better yet, if you are looking for a specific style or feeling, choose a stylist whose work reflects that. Don’t bring a neat chignon to a stylist who specializes in messy, lived-in looks. You might end up with a different look than you were anticipating, and be VERY let down.
Also, have a picture of your dress handy too. Most stylists are creative by nature- we like to see the WHOLE picture in order to decide what look works best. It will also save you a hair catastrophe…beaded necklines can snarl in your hair and be very painful if you decide to wear it all down, while a sweetheart neckline can look very bare with the hair completely pulled back, etc…
And lastly: Come with a fresh face, no makeup, and semi-clean hair.
While everyone wants to believe that dirty hair styles best...in this modern age, we stylists, have TONS of products capable of "dirtying up the hair". It's best to check the oil at the door, so as to ensure whatever style you do choose is not weighed down by 2-3 days of dry-shampoo.
